EU Referendum: Opinion

Last week Britain voted, by 52% to 48%, to leave the European Union. We are lucky enough to live in a democracy, and it is important to respect everyone’s votes, whichever way they were cast.

Naturally we respect the result of the referendum, but this does not mean that Liberal Democrats will stop believing in a future for Britain at the heart of Europe.

Leaving the EU will hit livelihoods, homes and jobs.

Sadly, we are already seeing that many of the things that were predicted by experts are coming true: the value of our currency has collapsed, the value of our pensions is decreasing, Scotland wanting to leave the UK, companies  moving jobs from the UK.

Many people are upset that the ‘leave’ campaign is renouncing their promises on things like the NHS and immigration before the slogans have even been peeled off their battle bus. We feel that the British people were told lie after lie.

Lib Dems have always believed our economy and place in the world is stronger in Europe and it is only right that we offer that as a choice to people at the next general election – whenever that might be.

We are the only Party which is committed to Britain at the heart of Europe. Since the Referendum people have been joining the Liberal Democrats at the rate of 1 a minute – if you want to be one of them join us today.

  1. you haven’t given them a chance to catch their breath, or the panic to calm down in the markets, you probably sold all your shares whilst you could, I believe that the EU will crumble so where would that have left us, we need to be strong in nerve just as we were in the last 2 world wars- we will come out stronger and a better future lies ahead, the sneaky Germans are already scouting our young talent, and soliciting for business which are based here- lets get out as quick as possible and start dealing with the rest of the world like we used to without the imposed tariffs of the EU

I agree with Mike. As usual the rich elite have made a killing on the stock markets and the money markets, driving the pound down. The people have made a democratic decision to leave the EU, which has changed drastically from the reason we joined in the first place. Its time now to pull together for the future, not keep harking on about how we are going to go down the pan. This is the political and moneyed elite, scaremongering and trying to keep the upper hand. Woe betide those that are not listening to the people, they wanted out of the EU, so lets get on with it and start securing our new position and future in the world. Why on earth are the Lib Dems taking a stance and disagreeing with the majority, saying they will support obtaining another referendum? That is not carrying out the peoples wishes and will lose them support. Most people do not realise that we do not have to go through a 2 year period of withdrawal, I believe our politicians could in fact ignore that and pass a law through the Houses of Parliament scrapping our agreement with the EU. This might have the effect of stopping the Brussels elite from punishing us both financially and placing unfair tariffs on us. This should be looked at, or will it be ignored by the so called MP’s who are not listening to the people they supposedly represent.
